O.K. Beer Okicim is a beer brewed by Browar Okocim S.A. (aka Carlsberg) out of Poland. Depending on where you look on the Internet, you’ll get different answers as to what style this beer is. Beer Advocate calls it a “Euro Pale Lager” while Rate Beer calls it a “Premium Lager”. Stawski distributing, which distributes this beer, markets this as a “Polish Pils style”. After checking my globe to see where Poland is (it’s bordered by Germany to the west and the Czech Republic to the southwest), I decided to review this beer against the German Pilsner style.
Appearance: Brilliantly bright, clear beer pale straw to gold in color, depending on how you hold it to the light. At initial pour, head is about 2~3 fingers in height and is a fluffy white color that held about 3-5 minutes before dissipating. ****
Aroma: Floral hop characteristics present with a light malt aroma. Just a hint of DMS. In brewing, DMS is an off-flavor that is reminiscent of cooked vegetable but in this style, cooked corn is more common. ****
Taste: Light malt, grainy taste. Kinda like Wheaties. A little sweet. Smooth but light hop flavor and bitterness. Doesn’t linger on the palette. Clean and crisp, medium-dry finish. *
Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation, slight stinging on the tongue. ****
Drinkability: Very drinkable beer. It’s clean and crisp with noticeable, yet light, malt flavor and low hop backbone. It’s easy going down and refreshing. This would be a good beer to introduce to lovers of the American lager styles in the hopes they’d try something different, something better. ****
Food: This would be good with a nice, crisp salad made of leafy greens. I can also see this going well with white meat fish, depending on the preparation. This could be a great counterpart to sashimi and certain sushi rolls without the heavy sauces.
3.4/5 stars*
* A decently rated beer, I’m pleasantly surprised. While pleasant in taste, this beer suffers in the “Taste” category in the sense that it doesn’t live up to the German Pilsner style. I expected more pronounced hop flavor and bitterness that would hit immediately and slowly dissipate. In the end, this beer seemed to look like a German Pilsner but seemed to tasted like a Premium American Lager.
