Mall for sale, Hofbrauhaus future uncertain

It looks like homeowners aren’t the only ones going into foreclosure. Just read this article in the San Jose Mercury News today. The latest victim in our country’s current economic slowdown is Cupertino Square, formerly known as Vallco Mall.

Having worked there in the past, I can say that I am not surprised. Business at the mall has always been historically slow, even with “go-to” anchor stores such as Macy’s and Sears. I remember how busy it would be during the holidays but even then the up-tick in traffic was what Valley Fair would have on a normal weekend.

Normally news like this wouldn’t raise an eyebrow to most beer lovers but Cupertino Square was slated to be the future home of Hofbräu Beer Hall Silicon Valley Cupertino, or Hofbräuhaus Cupertino for short. For the longest time, I was under the impression that the Hofbräuhaus was slated to open by the summer. With summer nearly over, I sent an email to a Hofbräuhau representative asking what was up. He thanked me for my interest but said he couldn’t really comment on anything at the moment. That’s usually a very bad sign and today’s article in the Merc only confirms my suspicions that all was not well.

Hopefully the situation at Cupertino Square can get resolved. I’ve had various people send me emails asking about the status of the Hofbräuhaus Cupertino and, to my chagrin, I had no answer. While I am only speculating that the future of Hofbräuhaus Cupertino is directly tied into what happens to Cupertino Square, it’s not a far stretch of the mind to link the two together.

This brings a tear to my eye! Granted Cupertino Square IMO isnt the greatest of locales for a Hofbrau but still; hopefully someone will come out of the woodworks and save this! Cant wait to see everyone on sunday.

    Prost!
